Touching Evil
Thanks to Iain for letting me know that one of my favorite sexy British actors, Robson Green, is back on PBS this month and next on Mystery’s showing of Touching Evil. Robson plays Detective Inspector Dave Creegan of the “Organised and Serial Crime Unit” (sic), an elite crime squad dedicated to combating serial crime in England.
Touching Evil is much darker than the previous show I saw Robson in, Reckless, but Robson makes good use of his dramatic acting chops. I can’t wait to see the other shows in the series through February.

Not much time for surfing the web today. The computer we’ve been using to broadcast WLLC over the Internet is messed up, which means I didn’t get to do my first radio show of the semester tonight. I tried reinstalling Windows, but the computer doesn’t want to boot from the CDROM drive.

Bill points out that Andrew Lloyd Webber stopped working on his sequel to The Phantom of the Opera. Pity. I thought some elements of the plot had potential.

Upgrade of Death
Be careful if you upgrade to AOL 5.0 - it’s been reported to affect other internet software programs and connections. Others report that it’s causing their computers to crash (via camworld).
Personally, when I upgraded to AOL 5.0 two months ago, I rebooted my machine and watched in horror as a DOS prompt appeared and said that it couldn’t find Windows. Fortunately, I only had to completely rewrite my autoexec.bat file, which the upgrade mysteriously deleted.

Thanks, Cam
I just discovered that camworld has linked to me as a site often visited. Camworld was one of the first weblogs I regularly visited and making his list is the Holy Grail for many webloggers. And don’t worry Cam - I won’t get pissed off when I ultimately get rotated off the list.
I wonder what his IP address is? I can tell who some of my visitors are from my referer logs, but many are a mystery.

Audra McDonald
According to Ken Mandelbaum, Audra McDonald will be appearing in the May Lincoln Center Sweeney Todd concert (which is to be recorded) as Johanna. I’ll finally get to hear Audra sing “Green Finch and Linnet Bird!”
I can’t believe I scooped Bill on a Audra McDonald news item.
Interestingly, with all the recent talk about cybersquatting, Audra’s official site is at www.audra-mcdonald.com, while www.audramcdonald.com points to a celebrity websites list which does not include any entries for Audra. Hm….

The Phantom of Manhattan
Bertie likes to make fun of me because I judge books by their cover (which she insists I should be above doing as a librarian). The other day, I found this fun shaped book on the library’s new books shelf that had a 2 to 1 length / width radio (instead of the standard 3 to 2 ratio).
Turns out that the book was The Phantom of Manhatten, a sequel of sorts to The Phantom of the Opera. I’ve never been the biggest fan of Andrew Lloyd Webbers’s musical version, but the recent announcement that he’s writing a sequel made me wonder if the two are related, which indeed they are: author Frederick Forsyth is adapting his book with ALW.
So what of the plot? It’s terribly melodramatic and ends with the accidential assassination of Christine Daae. But what’s really fascinating is the new opera the Phantom writes: The Angel of Shiloh, based on the American Civil War. If this stage sequel actually comes to pass, I’ll be very interested to hear the music ALW writes for this opera within the show.
