Hit or Miss

Entries from Jul 2001

My new computer arrived over a week ago, but I’ve been too busy to really put it though the paces. But so far, the performance seems to totally justify the purchase. I’m very satisfied with the vendor, gamepc.com, and their level of customizability.

Tonight, I finished setting up my old desktop as my new webserver, so hopefully this website will experience some faster load times (thanks to dynamic pages being generated more quickly server side).

Murder in Small Town X

Murder in Small Town X. It shouldn’t really surprise me that FOX, the network of Cops and When Animals Attack, has brewed up the first snuff reality show. But it does shock me that I found it so compelling I can’t wait to see next week’s episode.

The concept of 10 contestants investigating a murder really is pretty cool, but the use of film stock to record the contestants (instead of TV cameras) lends a too-realistic “documentary” feel to the proceedings. And the “death” of the the first contestant was needlessly acted out, unlike the metaphoric assassinations on The Mole (and of course, in the tradition of other reality shows, the Black person was the first to go).

Sorry about the rhododendrons. Anyhoo… TechTV’s The Screensavers parody the Dell commercial (that Martin Sargent is so sexy — and, he’s a Phi Bet to boot).

Shoshkele rumble

Shoshkele rumble. These new flash ads that hover over the content of web pages are getting really annoying. I especially hate the ones with audio you can’t turn off unless you go forward or backward to another page. And tonight, while reading the news at E!Online, I had two different ads pop up on the screen at the same time and hover and zoom over each other, fighting for my attention.

My recent redesign will be the last bit of work on do on this site for a while due to GREASE opening tomorrow night, followed by a week and a half of Hall Director training, followed by a week of Student Advisor training, and then Freshmen week at my university (basically I will have no free time for the entire month of August).

Someone really needs to get a stick out of their ass — the list of glbt weblogs and journals I compile is just a hobby, but one of the people listed there keeps complaining about the way his site is listed. Maybe if he didn’t insist on non-standard characters and complicated HTML… You don’t like the way I do it? Start your own freaking list.

Pic of the moment.

As frustrating as this production of GREASE I’m in has been, there are still random moments of fun — like when my dance partner Bethany and I posed for this picture tonight (the dreaded hour of picture posing after the final rehearsal). I’ll be amazed if I don’t end up throwing out my back.

A bat, a jazzy dyke, and a trio.

Mini-reviews of three recent purchases from Amazon…

Bat Boy: an upbeat, belter rock musical in the vein of Side Show or Rent (i.e. Broadway’s version of rock). Silly story, but some kickass, rousing numbers (like “Comfort and Joy”).

Play it Cool: Lesbian commedianne Lea Delaria proves she can heat up the joint with sizzling jazz renditions of showtunes, including “Welcome to My Party” (which is the sole reason I ever listen to the LaChiusa version of The Wild Party).

3hree: three mini-one act musicals. The critics seem to favor the third one (”Flight of the Lawnchair Man”), but I found it trite and silly (If I want to hear a show about flying, I’ll listen to Wings). But the first two acts both have some bouncy and haunting tunes.

Why aren’t there more one-act musicals (like “Weird Romance” or “Romance, Romance,” both sadly out of print)?

I’m looking forward to seeing Hedwig and the Angry Inch (though I’ll probably have to wait for it to come out on DVD). Most of the reviews have been pretty positive, but this one from Salon inexplicably uses masculine pronouns to refer to Hedwig. But in a way, it almost seems wrong to use either set of pronouns to refer to Hedwig.

Online personality disorder test

Online personality disorder test. Big surprise — I’m paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal, avoidant, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive.

My week as a Nielsen household is over and my tv diary is online. I watched a total of 17.5 hours of tv this past week, under the usual amount since I’m busy with play rehearsal.
