AMA chastises MSN for advertising drinking products as “back to school kits.” “Marketing the alcohol-related gifts with other care packages for makeup and notebooks ‘perpetuates the belief that society winks at underage drinking, viewing it as a coming of age ritual and not as a dangerous activity with legal and life-changing consequences’” (via NextDraft).

We take this issue so seriously at Truman that we do not allow students to have any empty alcohol containers or alcohol-related posters, etc. in their dorm rooms.

The blog as personal ad

The blog as personal ad. Sure, sounds like a great idea. But not if you live in the middle of rural America, where there are few techno-fiends like myself, let alone gay men.

Parents fret over binge drinking; Colleges say they should. Yes, drinking is a problem. But maybe not the widespread problem that reactionary articles like this blow it up to be. Most college students don’t drink as much as parents, the media, or each other students think they do, which is the basis for a new approach to alcohol education called Social Norming. We’re using this approach at Truman this year, to try to help students resist the pressure to drink solely because they think others do.

Crush of the moment:

Ben Browder of The SciFi Channel’s Farscape. I just recently started watching, lured by the hunky Browder in the commercials. Turns out it’s a half-decent show.

Ways to pass morning office hours…

Here’s a fun (and tricky) Shockwave game called Loop (via scrubbles.net) and some neatly stylized flash movies (via plasticbag.org).

I know I haven’t done much to support it, but I’m kind of surprised that Web Queeries hasn’t caught on more. I would have thought that a “gay”-Metafilter would have been a natural. Anyone have any ideas? Does the interface just suck?

My supervisor told me yesterday that he had a vivid dream the night before that I had willfully burned down the residence hall I’m in charge of (because I was “frustrated”) and that he had to fire me. When he woke up, it took him several minutes to realize that it just had been a dream.

What the hell does that mean?
