Hit or Miss

Entries from Dec 2002

Home for the holidays.

I’m visiting my folks in Chattanooga, TN, for the semester break.

I spent 3 hours in the Atlanta airport on a layover, so I rode the terminal trains around for a while, pretending I was on the subway in New York. And, after wearing my TiVo hat the past few times I’ve flown hoping to run into a fellow TiVo enthusiast, I was finally stopped by one of the airline stewards on my last flight, who raved about how TiVo helps him catch the shows he misses while flying.

Preorder Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and get a bonus disc with 2 previous Zelda games ported to the GameCube.

The screenshots and video clips from the new game are unreal — they look kind of like how Dragon’s Lair might have functioned if you had actually gotten to control Dirk instead of just picking from preanimated sequences.

Using Mod_rewrite to block hot linked images. Because the script I wrote to check traffic on my site filters out referers to images, I hadn’t realized how many people were linking to pictures on my server for posts on web forums, etc. After editing my .htaccess file, all off-site links to images on hitormiss.org now display this.

It’s amazing to me how “The Caroline Rhea Show,” using the same set and format as its predecessor “The Rosie O’Donnell Show,” can come off feeling so heterosexual in comparison.

I knew Rosie was a lesbian from the beginning, and I loved her showtune-slinging bandleader John McDaniel and campy hairdresser David Evangelista. Compare and contrast Caroline’s incessant fawning over every male guest and her admittedly hot new bandleader Chris Botti, and the show just screams “we’re straight!” But I guess it’s really no more heterocentric than any other talk show — I enjoyed always reading between the lines for the subtext on Rosie’s show, but I’d love to see a mainstream talk show with an openly gay host.

My dorm was the victim of arson yesterday morning. Sometimes I think as I get older I’m losing touch with today’s college students and the motivations for their actions. Then I remind myself I never understood why students vandalize, etc.

E-commerce woes Part 2.

Less than 24 hours after spending forty minutes on the phone with Orbitz customer service trying to straighten out my plane tickets that “hadn’t been mailed yet” because they didn’t believe my address was valid, I received the tickets via 2-day Fed Ex — meaning that the tickets had already been sent when I talk to their rep. Call me naive, but shouldn’t the rep have been able to tell the tickets had been sent already?

And, I boxed up my Sidekick for return today. T-Mobile’s wireless data department kept telling me I should be getting excellent service, but I couldn’t connect inside any buildings and I kept losing the connection even as I walked outside across campus. It’s a pretty cool package, but I think I’ll probably spring for a Treo instead when I move to my next job.
