Goodbye Mister Rogers

Goodbye Mister Rogers.

The slow-paced show offered an alternate universe to most of today’s quick-edit cartoon children’s programming. But on the eve of his final show, Rogers told CNN’s Jeff Greenfield he looks at it as more than entertainment; it’s a chance to reach young people and give them a foundation for a good life.

I’d have to agree — when I was a kid (before cable), I watched a lot of PBS and I think it helped me become the person I am today.

Mister Rogers will be missed.

Fraternity Life

Fraternity Life. Forget the catfights and bad hair of Sorority Life — it’s time for the beer guts and terrible acne of Fraternity Life (or for my favorite game: spot the closeted frat boy. So far, my wild guess is Colin, Tim, Dan, or Jarreau).

Trip canceled.

My flight to St. Louis (to catch my connecting flight to NY) took off this morning and then promptly sat back down on the runway. Engine problems. Since this is the only plane that flies out of Kirksville, my trip is effectively canceled.

Given my extreme level of nervousness going into the trip, I’m now fighting off alternating waves of regret and relief. This is the kind of thing that has kept me from ever planning a vacation before, so it’ll probably be 10 more years before I consider taking one again.

I’ll be in NYC for the next 5 days.

This trip kind of snuck up on me and I don’t really feel prepared, but I usually overplan everything so I’m going to try winging it for once.

I have no real agenda other than visiting NYU on Tuesday and shadowing one of its hall directors (to help me decide if I want to work on an urban campus next year). I’m going to hit the TKTS booth and try to get tickets for AIDA, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, or LITTLE FISH (though I’ll probably end up having to pay full price for the latter). I’m going to eat a bagel with locks. Maybe I’ll go shopping at Footlight Records. Who knows?

Okay, so maybe I won’t dye my goatee — but I did let one of my co-workers pluck out the middle of my monobrow in his office today.

I really try not to be vain - I stopped cutting the gray hairs out of my goatee because nowadays there wouldn’t be much hair leftover. But I’m actually considering trying Just for Men facial hair coloring.

Test.

I’m posting this from my cell phone, just to see if it will work.

Daredevil

Daredevil. I’m usually not the biggest fan of comic book movies, but Daredevil managed to be a thrilling ride (once it got past some rather laborious exposition). The visual effects created to depict Ben Affleck’s blindness were pretty cool — it makes me wonder what stories are left that can’t be told by today’s digital moviemaking.

Of course, the real reason I went was to see the amazing Jennifer Garner. She got a lot less screen time than I expected — but that’s what sequels are for I guess. She is such a goddess. AND she’s hosting SNL tonight. If ALIAS hadn’t been preempted this Sunday by the reportedly horrid MUSIC MAN, I’d be suffering from Jennifer Garner overload.
