“I quit”
I morosely trudged into my boss’s office yesterday and told him that I was miserable and that I didn’t feel like I was a good match for the job and that I wanted to give him advance notice before quitting so he could find a replacement for me.
Afterward, I came to my senses and realized that what I had really needed to do was vent and so today I unquit.
There’s a million reasons why I got to that point, but the one I’d like to share here is this:

Blogiversary
According to my archives today is the 4th birthday for my weblog (but if you read entry #1, it looks like I must have written a few previous posts that have been lost to the ether). What is 4 in blogs years? Like 40 or 50 years?
Once again I heap praise upon Cam and Brad, whose weblogs I first ran across and inspired me to start my own.
Blogging for me has always been more of a technical exercise (a chance to futz around programming my own CMS or fawning over TiVo), but now that I’ve moved to MoveableType (and more importantly, moved to New York City), hopefully more worthwhile content will start to show up around here… that is, if I can remember to start carrying around my digital camera and stop whining about how stressful my job is.
The birthday of this weblog always reminds me that my own birthday is right around the corner (Sept 9).

New version of you
So I managed to live through the first day of check-in after all. Not that it wasn’t frustrating as hell and almost reduced me to tears once or twice (why won’t the furniture in my apartments stay in one place?), but by the end of the day I could start to see the light. Then I spent a nice quiet evening at home, decompressing and resting for tomorrow’s check-in continuation.
I caught the pilot episode of FELICITY (which I hadn’t seen before) and realized that I’m probably doing a better job of adjusting to NYC than I give myself credit for. Thinking about the show’s theme song (mp3), I realized that I moved to NYC to create a “new version” of me too — and that’s not going to happen overnight (or during a conveniently plotted one-hour episode). It’ll take time. And since I’m going to be here for the rest of the academic year at least, I shouldn’t try to rush things and instead just let them develop naturally.

Bag Buddies
After spending too much money on my new bag (which I LOVE by the way), Mike bested me by finding a new man purse through Ebay. Since the one he found was closer to the size I was originally looking for, I ordered one too ($12 cheap, including shipping).
Of course, I ordered the navy blue instead of black (I don’t think I’ve ever owned a backpack or satchel that WASN’T navy blue) so we won’t look like twins next time Mike and I go out together.

Rufus Wainwright
The first single (”Oh, What A World”) from Rufus Wainwright’s new album is now on his website. “Bolero” quote notwithstanding, it’s pretty good and I think I might try to catch his album signing in Chelsea on Sept 23.

Insure Your MetroCard
Since my dorm is pretty far from the campus (we take the 4/5 or 2/3 from Fulton to 14th St), I’ve been encouraging my students to buy the monthly unlimited MetroCard, but they’re all too scared of losing and having to replace it.
Fortunately, MTA is working on a free MetroCard insurance program (via Gothamist).
