Rufus Wainwright
The first single (”Oh, What A World”) from Rufus Wainwright’s new album is now on his website. “Bolero” quote notwithstanding, it’s pretty good and I think I might try to catch his album signing in Chelsea on Sept 23.

Insure Your MetroCard
Since my dorm is pretty far from the campus (we take the 4/5 or 2/3 from Fulton to 14th St), I’ve been encouraging my students to buy the monthly unlimited MetroCard, but they’re all too scared of losing and having to replace it.
Fortunately, MTA is working on a free MetroCard insurance program (via Gothamist).

Only time will tell…
I hate to say it, but I think moving to New York was a mistake. You never know how you’ll match up with a job until you try it, and quite frankly I’m proving pretty incapable so far. And I’m pretty sure I’m not enjoying what I’m doing. I have no clue how to make any friends — not that I have any free time to do so. Additionally I’m too much of cheapskate to go do anything fun, or even buy groceries (resulting in a few weeks of eating only peanut butter sandwiches).
I know I’m probably just cranky because it’s the night before student check-in and there’s a million things not finished and I’ll be facing a horde of angry parents tomorrow. I’m trying not to think too much about the job I turned down in Wisconsin that would have paid more and given me a nicer place to live with a meal plan, free laundry, and a reserved parking spot right outside my dorm.
If I can make it past this weekend, maybe New York will prove me wrong.

Multimedia Keyboard
I’ve always thought the concept of a multimedia keyboard (a keyboard with buttons to stop and start your music program and to control the volume) seemed kind of silly. Who is too lazy to just tab over to Winamp and press pause?
Then I tried listening to music today to calm myself during new student check-in at my dorm, and I probably had to pause Winamp 70 or 80 times (for each phone call and drop in to my office).

Telco Powered Products
Just in case the power does go out again, maybe I should get a telephone line-powered fashlight.
