New York in living color
Gothamist linked a great collection of New York City photographs today from the 1940s-60s. Just like the amazing turn-of-the-century Russian photo collection at the Library of Congress, these color photos help to erase the black and white conception of the past.
I was particularly interested in this photo, which shows Maiden Lane running beside my building (I’m catty-corner to the Federal Reserve in the distance). What is now Louise Nevelson Plaza (photo), a triangular wedge of land outside my building with sculptures, was apparently occupied by a building as late as 1960.
Another neighborhood tidbit: here’s the story behind the series of numbers on the side of the building at the corner of John and Water St.

Integrated Quicklink Redesign
I’ve redesigned the front page of my weblog to combine the regular blog entries with the Quicklinks in one column — basically copying Jason Kottke’s recent redesign. I tried doing this once before, but I couldn’t write an SQL statement in my old CMS that would accomplish it.
Unlike Kottke, I’ve managed to format the entries with 2 different templates using only simple MT plugins (and without having to use the MT SQL plugin). I simply had to make one useful addition to the Global Listings plugin, which I’ve suggested to the author for his next release. As soon as I get a chance, I’ll post the templates I’m using.
Any and all feedback is welcome.

A Presidential Visit to Avenue Q
Why do I still love Clinton? Bush would never go see a show like Avenue Q, let alone have enough of a sense of humor to pose for a picture with the big perv, Trekkie Monster.

A lone voice of dissent
Am I the only person in the world who didn’t enjoy Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King? It was nothing but clichéd platitudes about facing death alternated with fakey CGI battles (if I want to watch a digitally animated live action film, I’ll watch the trailer for Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow). Maybe I’d feel differently if I had ever gotten into Tolkien.
Speaking of Sky Captain, I know trailers often use stock soundtrack audio, but the use of the Stargate SG-1 theme is particularly cheesy.
