Hello from 8th Street
Jeff and I successfully moved up from the Financial District to our new apartment on 8th Street at Fifth Ave. There’s still lots of unpacking to do, but at least we managed to move everything (that’s actually a lie… I’m still working out of my old office for a few weeks and there’s a few odds and ends back at the old apartment I’ll bring home after work).
Here’s a few photos of the new pad (prior to moving stuff in yesterday):

Breathing Deeply
People who know me know that I can get worked up and burnt out worrying about things beyond my control. Working as a Residence Hall Director in the middle of New York City has been a real test of my ability to respond calmly to unexpected situations I have no control over.
I’m moving up to 5 W 8th St. to be the director of a different residence hall (Marlton House) for the Fall. Marlton was supposed to be empty over the summer, but now we’re going to host around 30-50 high school students (overflow from another building) for a summer program. So I’m going to have to temporarily run both Marlton and my current building (which is full of people) until my replacement starts her job on July 11. It looks like I’ll need to move to Marlton next Friday, June 24, but I haven’t started packing yet.
And the real kicker? The check-in day for these students is Sunday, June 26 — the last Sunday in June. In other words, the day of the NYC Gay Pride Parade, which turns the corner from 5th Ave at 8th St and runs right in front of the building. So no one will be able to pull their car up to the building to unload and check in.

Lawsuit waiting to happen
My friend Ellen and I were at the Atlantic Ave subway stop and saw a guy fall after stepping into this hole in the ground (it was right at the end of a flight of stairs).
Being the helpful Residence Life people we are, we helped him up and guarded the hole (so no one else would fall in it) for almost half-an-hour before the MTA guy showed up to fix it.

Staten Island Ferry
Because I never really visited NYC before I moved here, I haven’t done most of the typical-touristy things (like visiting the Empire State Buiding or the Statue of Liberty). I finally got around to riding the Staten Island Ferry yesterday (after living a few blocks away for 2 years).
Back in October 2003, I had the afternoon off and idly thought about riding the Ferry (I had walked the Brooklyn Bridge for the first time with Sparky the night before), but the weather was looking bad so I went to the gym instead. As I was leaving the gym, the TVs broadcast news of a terrible Ferry crash. So, I didn’t feel compelled to ride the Ferry afterwards.
Jeff and I were bored yesterday so we rode the ferry to Staten Island and came right back. Uneventful, but a nice way to spend an hour. I got a closer look at Governor’s Island, which I want to visit before Jeff and I move up to the Village next month.
While departing the ferry, I noticed that we had just ridden the “Andrew J. Barberi” — the same Ferry that had been in the accident 2 years earlier. A little Googling uncovers an online petition asking for that ferry to be renamed.
had thought about riding it a few months after moving here, but then the

Sniff, sniff
Note to self: If your feet stink, spraying them with Febreeze does not solve the problem (and pulling socks on to wet feet is also a bummer).
