Not only does it make sense, but it resonates with some of David Brin’s ideas regarding the series (http://www.davidbrin.com/starwarsarticle1.html).
In particular, note who is the BIG hero at the end of Ep. VI. Hint: He’s a harry harry animal that flies the Falcon and destroys the second death star.
